INTL REC LEAGUE

Sports Leagues Reimagined

What is the IRL?

The International Rec(reational) League (@intlrecleague on Instagram) is a sports league based in Seongnam-si South Korea ran by Alex Choi. It has amassed hundreds of signups and participants across Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball Leagues that are meant to accomplish the following goals:

  • Establish an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) style league for South Korean International Students, as there is nothing like it in Korea. It is supposed to emulate the American high school sports experience by allowing recently graduated alumni to return and play with other members of the international school community, something that was not possible before.

  • Bring a sense of community and connection between the International Schools.

  • Allow individuals interested in Sports Videography and Photography (like myself) to practice their art and improve their skills.

  • Lastly, it was also started to help myself self-teach how to market an organization and league, in order to incentivize athletes to sign up and participate.

SUMMER 2024 SOCCER TOURNAMENT

  • After months of preparation, the largest league that I have ever hosted happened on June 27-28, 2024. This soccer league amassed over 200 signups and over 170 attendees across 10 different teams that each represented an International School in South Korea.

  • Collected ₩4,758,120 (~$3445 USD) in Sponsorships and Donations in order to fund the event and have a grand prize ($1200) for the Winning Team.

  • The League’s Financial Manager Jayden Kim (Chadwick International ‘25) was able to manage, advertise, and work with many sponsors and businesses to help raise this large amount of funding.
